The Eevee Day celebrations are over and your Pokémon Sleep storage box is full of Eevee that you are not sure whether you should keep, evolve or send to the candy blender? Hopefully this summary guide can help you making that decision!
Considering how quickly updates to Pokémon Sleep come around, I try to minimise the amount of permanent actions I make, in favour of waiting for potential future events (double candy from transferring, for example) or the introduction of nature mints (unlikely).
Even so, many of us have been able to befriend a significant amount of Eevee and deciding which of the 8 Eeveelutions to pick can be intimidating.
After a lot of research, often going back to the same Reddit posts that discuss this, I decided to make this as a reference for myself and others to finally answer the question: ‘which Eeveelution should I choose?’
⚠️ A Note of Warning (expand) ⚠️
The game has been introducing new features fairly quickly, which means the advice given here might not be relevant or accurate in the future.
Importantly, this is not a competitive game; there is no reason to min-max your play style, unless you want to. I like being purposeful with my choices because that’s how I have fun in this game. If your favourite Eeveelution is Leafeon and that’s what you want to choose, please disregard everything I’m saying (and also you are wrong, the best Eeveelution is obviously Vaporeon).
Please do check the extra resources at the bottom of this post to dive deeper into this topic, if you want to. There are many variables to consider for each unique Eevee. This process is completely dependent on your playstyle and team composition needs.
In order to assess which Eeveelution is best for your Eevee we need to cover some basic information first. Eevee is the one of the few Pokémon in the game whose signature Berry and Main Skill will change upon evolution. This means that:
You should check what Berry and Main Skill each Eeveelution will get
You would then want to check this against your Eevee’s Sub Skills and Nature (which will not be altered) and see if they complement each other
You might also want to consider which Eeveelution would most benefit your team composition in a certain area (i.e. do you need an ingredient finder in Cyan Beach? Or support in Taupe Hollow?)
In general, and as of writing this post, the best Sub Skills for Eeveelutions are, in no particular order: Skill Trigger S/M, Skill Level Up S/M, Berry Finding S*, Helping Bonus. The best natures are the ones that boost Main Skill Chance and Speed of Help.
In an ideal world, your Eevee would only have skill-boosting stats. In reality (and hence the reasoning for the guide below), you will not have many of these rare Eevee, but a combination of many different skills. Therefore, you are probably better off prioritising certain Eevee for certain evolutions.
*Berry Finding S can be a double-edged sword, filling up your inventory too quickly and preventing skills from triggering!
As mentioned before, each Eeveelutions has its strengths and weaknesses. It’s up to you to assess how your Eevee matches up to each potential evolution.
Favourable Research Area: Cyan Beach
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Ingredient Finder S/M, Inventory Up S/M/L
Natures that boost Ingredient Finding
Out of all of them, Vaporeon is the most suitable for ingredient finding. While all Eeveelutions are Skill specialists, Vaporeon’s skill could work well with those Eevee with Sub Skills related to Inventory and Ingredients that often do not mesh with the others.
Still, as Skill specialists, Eeveelutions will always benefit from Skill Trigger S/M and Skill Level Up S/M. But you might want to prioritise, for example, Sylveon or Espeon when these rare specimens come around.
Favourable Research Area: Old Gold Power Plant
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Helping Bonus, Helping Speed S/M
Natures that boost Speed of Help
Jolteon is the fastest at gathering resources. This is why you might want to prioritise Eevee that have Sub Skills such as Helping Bonus or natures that boost Speed of Help.
Jolteon works very similarly to Raichu, so keep that in mind if you already have a viable Pichu in your box. With the release of Old Gold Power Plant, every Eeveelution now has a favourable research area!
Favourable Research Area: Taupe Hollow
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Helping Bonus, Energy Recovery Bonus, Helping Speed S/M
Natures that boost Speed of Help or Energy Recovery
Flareon is currently considered one of the weaker options. Its Main Skill requires you to have an ingredient/cooking-oriented team, as it will occasionally let you cook bigger meals.
In general, Flareon will fulfil a support role. Like Vaporeon, while it benefits from skill boosts or berry finding boosts, these are more optimal for Espeon/Sylveon or Umbreon/Glaceon.
Favourable Research Area: Lapis Lakeside
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Skill Level Up S/M, Skill Trigger S/M
Natures that boost Main Skill Chance
Espeon is currently one of the best Eeveelutions, with a fairly quick gathering rate and a very good Main Skill, especially when levelled up. Since the release of Lapis Lakeside, it's become even more coveted, although free-to-play players might want to reserve their Skills Seeds for a team member whose main skill is Energy for Everyone S instead.
One thing to consider is that the requirement for evolution (like for Umbreon and Sylveon) is to sleep together for 150 hours. This means keeping an Eevee on the team for roughly two weeks, which can slow you down somewhat.
Favourable Research Area: Snowdrop Tundra
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Berry Finding S, Energy Recovery Bonus
Natures that boost Speed of Help, EXP Gains or Energy Recovery
Umbreon is the slowest at gathering resources, but it can be a real asset in Snowdrop Tundra where Wiki Berries are Snorlax’s favourites. Its Main Skill means it can self-sustain and with Berry Finding S you can maximise the amount of berries Umbreon will gather.
In November 2024, Umbreon's Main Skill received an update and it is now the only Eeveelution with a signature ability, Moonlight. It restores Umbreon's own energy and, occasionally, it will restore a random member's energy by a small amount. In general, this is not as valuable as Energy for Everyone, but it shows that other Eeveelutions may receive similar updates to their Main Skill in the future.
Avoid picking Eevee with Skill Trigger S/M, Skill Level Up S/M or Main Skill Chance as you will get much more out of them on Espeon and Sylveon.
Favourable Research Area: Lapis Lakeside
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Helping Bonus, Energy Recovery Bonus, Helping Speed S/M
Natures that boost Speed of Help or Energy Recovery
Unfortunately, at the moment Leafeon has very little to offer. It’s best suited for support, but, unlike Flareon, its Main Skill can be very unpredictable, occasionally energising a single one of your helpers at random.
Leafeon, like Espeon, hugely benefitted from the release of Lapis Lakeside. However, it is outclassed in both berry gathering and energy support by many other Pokémon.
Favourable Research Area: Snowdrop Tundra
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Berry Finding S, Energy Recovery Bonus
Natures that boost Speed of Help, EXP Gains or Energy Recovery
Glaceon is most similar to Umbreon, so I would suggest a similar build, as they also share the same favourable Research Area.
The biggest difference is their Main Skill, but neither of them is particularly significant (some argue that Cooking Power-Up S is even less important in the early game). You might also want to keep the evolution method in mind: you can get a free Ice Stone pretty early on in the game, making this evolution much quicker to obtain compared to Umbreon.
Favourable Research Area: Cyan Beach / any
You should probably prioritise Eevee with:
Sub Skills: Skill Trigger S/M, Skill Level Up S/M
Natures that boost Main Skill Chance
Sylveon is arguably the strongest option and in general one of the best helpers in the game. Its Main Skill (Energy for Everyone S) can be used on virtually any team in any Research Area, since any team will benefit from regularly being energised. Sylveon competes with Wigglytuff for its Main Skill, so if you already have a good Wigglytuff, you could consider Espeon instead.
Skill Trigger S/M will influence the frequency of the Main Skill. Skill Level Up S/M will influence how many times the skill activates. Both are good, though I often prefer prioritising Skill Trigger S/M (in combination with Main Skill Chance) to maximise the amount of times it triggers in a day.
Hopefully this is a helpful resource to guide your decision. I will try to keep this up-to-date as more features and Research Areas are released.
In the meantime, please check out some of these posts where other players have explained their thought process and that I have used to learn about the topic:
