The first DLC instalment for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet takes place in the faraway land of Kitakami and, in the spirit of the open-world setting, you will be faced with several new challenges to take on in the order you prefer.
My fellow completionists will start by spending several hours collecting the thousands of items scattered across this new region (as did I!), but what other things can you do in Kitakami?
I played through Violet, but I will likely want to complete the DLC on my copy of Scarlet eventually, so I thought this article would also be helpful to future me!
Most of the new content available in the DLC will be introduced as you progress through its main story. Like in the base game, there will be cues to move the story along, clearly marked on your map.
The story on its own will probably take 2-4 hours depending on your playstyle.
⚠️ Spoilery Bits (expand) ⚠️
If you have completed the base game and have a fairly well-trained team you will likely steamroll most of your opponents
I decided to create a whole new team using Kitakami Pokemon and enjoyed struggling a bit through the story battles
You will be forced to lie to Kieran and be complicit in what is essentially bullying, yay!
Style Card: Very early on into the story, Kieran and Carmine’s grandmother will gift you a Style Card (and immediately cut your hair without your consent).
With that, all Paldean clothing shops will have several new items for sale and salons will offer a few more hair options. These shops and salons are located in Mesagoza, Cascarrafa and Levincia. If you want to buy them all, be ready to spend several millions of Poké Dollars overall.
You will also automatically receive a green jinbei (letting you finally change out of your school uniform).
After you have completed the story, you can go back to Kieran and Carmine’s grandmother to receive two new jinbei, one white and one blue. (One more jinbei is available but I will leave that for the spoiler section.)
The stalls in Kitakami Hall will also start selling clothing items, including masks, funny glasses and new Rotom cases.
⚠️ Spoilery Bits (expand) ⚠️
After playing through the story, you will be asked to donate money to rebuild the shrine to the Loyal Three. After 10 donations of 100,000 Pokedollars (i.e. one million in total), you will reach the objective and receive a flashy jinbei
To start this sidequest the photographer in Mossui Town, Perrin, will require you to catch at least 150 Pokémon from the Kitakami dex. This means that even if you completed the Paldea dex you still have some way to go before being able to start this sidequest.
Perrin will ask you to go on a short expedition focused around photographing wild Pokémon in the Timeless Woods. I was expecting this quest to be a lot longer, but it’s fairly straightforward and soon after the short mini-game, you will be able to encounter and catch a unique new Pokémon.
⚠️ Spoilery Bits (expand) ⚠️
When Perrin asks if you are ready to meet this special Ursaluna, that’s your chance to save
If you want to reset, this will be your reset point (though keep in mind that, like most of these encounters, Bloodmoon Ursaluna cannot be shiny)
Billy and O’Nare are two characters you meet near the rice paddies in Mossui Town. They are rich tourists whose journey you can follow across Kitakami and Paldea.
The two are insufferable and entertaining at the same time, but most importantly they will reward you with expensive items and money.
They will occasionally challenge you to battle and if you are short on money I would highly recommend giving an Amulet Coin to your Pokémon or use the move Happy Hour (or both!) as the rewards are very generous! At the end of this tour across Kitakami and Paldea, you will also receive a new Glitterati case for your Rotom phone.
⚠️ Spoilery Bits (expand) ⚠️
In the final battle against O’Nare she will use an Arboliva in addition to her trusted Persian. This seems like an intentional choice from the developers but it isn’t entirely clear to me what the reason for it was (please let me know if you have a theory!)
Despite rumours from fans and unofficial websites that Billy and O’Nare are Nemona’s rich parents (whom she mentions while you are together in Area Zero), this is never actually revealed in this DLC as far as I am aware
You will be given hints about each location to go to, but these will get more and more vague. Compounded with the game’s poor loading distance and general mediocre performance, you might want to look at a cheat sheet for their specific locations
Scattered across Kitakami are a handful of formidable trainers, recognisable by the black text box above them as you approach them.
There are 8 in total and they will award you competitively-relevant items.
As with most games in the franchise, you can once again collect them all! Now, if you completed the Paldea dex, you will be half-way there already.
Using the Pokédex app will once again grant you brand-new rewards! Interesting ones include Apricorn Balls and new evolution items.
Pay attention to these evolution items, as there are limited ways to acquire them. You can find a limited amount of them as items on the ground, but the only repeatable method will be to play the Ogre Oustin’ mini-game.
Don’t forget to get your certificate (and a new item, the Glittering Charm) from Jacq after you catch all 200 of them!
This new mini-game will require you to ride your Miraidon/Koraidon in order to collect different types of berries within a limited amount of time.
There are several difficulties available (Easy, 3 stages; Normal, 6 stages; Hard 10 stages). Weirdly enough, there is no way to connect to the Internet and match with random players, even though Normal and Hard modes do require 2-4 players to complete. In fact, Hard difficulty will most likely prove to be quite challenging even with a team of 4 people, so make sure you agree on a strategy!
Several one-time and standard rewards can be obtained, even if you don’t complete all stages in each difficulty.
⚠️ Spoilery Bits (expand) ⚠️
One-time rewards include EXP. Charm, Air Balloon and 3 Nuggets for completing Easy mode; Fairy Feather (new item!) and 1 Big Nugget for completing Hard mode; a Shiny Munchlax for completing Hard mode
Amongst standard rewards are newly available berries and items like Mochi: Fresh-Start Mochi will reset all your Effort Values; other types of Mochi will act exactly like vitamins, giving your Pokemon 10 EVs in a specific stat
This game is also the only way to consistently obtain evolution items like the Unremarkable Teacup, Masterpiece Teacup, Prism Scale, Razor Fang and Reaper Cloth
New TMs are available in Kitakami! You can collect TM172 to TM201 now. All of them will be available from the TM Machine, but one copy of each one can be found somewhere in Kitakami
New emotes and poses are available! Some of them will unlock as you go through the story, others are unlocked by talking to specific NPCs
You can upgrade your Rotom Phone and menus by talking to the reception in Mossui Town and to the app developer next to the Loyalty Plaza
Near Kitakami Hall, an NPC will show you how to customise chairs in your picnic set. You will have to show him different tablecloths patterns purchased from Paldean shops to unlock the corresponding chair pattern. Once you unlock all the patterns, he will reward you with two complete sets of Herba Mystica!
One additional small thing you can do is get the woman at the Mossui Town shop to accept LP as payment. Initially she will be sceptical of what she calls your ‘cryptic currency’ but after you torment her for a bit asking to pay in LP she will give in and ask for a little time to get things set up. When you return after about 30 minutes of in-game time, she will eventually tell you that LP is now an acceptable form of payment!
Have you found any more things to do in Kitakami? Is there more to complete that I have missed?
